The Wikipedia can answer all your questions:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tatort

Tatort is one of the most popular crime shows in Germany, and it has long been used to also promote the various regions of Germany, as the episodes' locations are in different states. It also produced a spin-off called "Schimanski"
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horst_Schimanski
(sorry, German only) with actor Götz George as Horst Schimanski in the main role, known for his rather "innovative" and sometimes rude investigation methods.

The most famous German TV crime series, however, is Derrick:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derrick_(TV_series)
It has been translated (dubbed and subtitled) into many languages, and the most famous sentence out of it is "Harry, fahr den Wagen vor!" (Harry, get the car!) -- although that EXACT sentence was never said in the series.

If you like detective stories, I'd also recommend "Ein Fall für Zwei"
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ein_Fall_f%C3%BCr_2
(sorry, again German only), a long-running TV series about a private investigator and a lawyer located in Frankfurt/Main.

They speak perfect Hochdeutsch in all of these series.

If you want to have fun, however, go to www.myspass.de and search for "Dr Psycho". It's a crime series about a psychologist who suddenly is assigned to a special investigations team that suffer from, well: psychological problems, and by trying to solve them, he solves one or another criminal case, too, mostly unwillingly. My favorite episode is the one where he shoots his dog (named "Freud", like "Sigmund Freud") by mistake...

To help you with your search, "Staffel" in German tv speak means "season", and "Episode" is just what you expect it to be.

Wheely
1 . ) yes
2. ) since Tatort takes place in different regions some actors speak the local dialect. For example : Tatort from Stuttgart they have Swabian accent and Tatort Wien they got Austrian accent but not every actor
3.) yes
4. ) Lindenstrasse and GZSZ. Tatort before was much better than it is now
5.) at amazon.de

1) Yes =)
2) they usually speak Hochdeutsch but some episodes are from Austria. But it's not very often. (Just once or twice in a year, I think) and sometimes other dialects , but they aren't so difficult to understand...
3) I watch it every sunday, but there are not many persons in my class, who watch it too, because they think it's more for older people...
=D
4) I think Tatort is good, because they mostly speak Hochdeutsch and show a lot of different towns from Germany.
5) http://www.daserste.de/tatort/faq.asp#faq2
their homepage says, that they haven't a DVD, because Tatort is shown very often in TV. But you can look at Amazon for some..
http://www.amazon.de/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=tatort+dvd&tag=googhydr08-21&index=aps&hvadid=2835215815&ref=pd_sl_2rad1n7c44_b

There were also Tatort radio plays. One time a month you can listen to one on NDR-Info on Saturday evening 21:05.

1) Yes, of course I heard of it, it's very often at TV.
2)Hochdeutsch of course, it's a German show, not an Austrian one.
3)Yes, it's very popular, especially among older people.
4)I would recomend Tatort, because they speak a very good Hochdeutsch there and it's not too difficult to understand.
5)You can buy it everywhere and when you want.

I hope I could help you a bit.
