Hellothere

Germans, what do you think are the best cities in your country?

I'm kind of intrigued by Hamburg. That seems most interesting to me.
But anyway, tell me all you can about the major cities, how they vary and what they have to offer and which you prefer, Many, many thanks.

ARRGH!!!
HAMBURG

It got seafeeling, big city appeal, metropolitan charme and is just great to live in. It is also a melting pot of different cultures and they all can express themselves here, in shops, festivals and such.

Hamburg is a fantastic city - it has the Speicherstadt, has a real salty sea dog kind of feel to it. Huge harbour and nice parks.

Berlin - the wall, Reichstag, Museum Insel, contemporary art and culture.

Dresden - amazing architecture.
There are lots of other amazing cities, but will take up too much space here:)

Ps - ignore the thumbs down on all the answers. I think all of them have good points. Germany has something to offer for everyone and if you tell us more about yourself, we will be able to recommend the best places to visit.

I find Berlin and Munich are Germany's most interesting cities. Berlin is a huge city and very interesting. Not only does it have a huge historical backround(The Berlin Wall and all) but it has also become one of Germany's coolest Nightlife scene.
Munich is ofcourse famous for the Oktoberfest which is a must see for anyone who's visiting Germany. It also is Bavaria's capital, Bavaria being the only "Bundesland"(County) where you will be most likely to see people wearing Lederhosen and Dirndl (The traditional clothing which most Foreigners believe Germans wear 24/7). Munich itself is just as cool as Berlin, the only difference consists of Munich being smaller and posher.
Hamburg to me is nothing special, I personally do not find the locals very nice and locals tend to over rate their city immensly.Duesseldorf is mostly like any other german city, the only difference being that it is germanys Fashion capital(Only because of the trade fairs though, if you want to go shopping Berlin has funky and extraordinary fashion and Munich sophisticated yet trendy fashion).

i´m living in Bremen. It`s a small city but nice.My Favorit City is Berlin.I like the people there and there´s a lot attraction

Berlin is my favourite city in Germany. Not only because of the historical parts of the city but because of the versitality. You can visit a lot of new art galleries, relax in one of the cafés, go shopping on one of the flea markets, have a great evening in the theatre and in the night you can go out in a club, bar or disco.

hmmm I would say Munich, Hamburg, Berlin and Dresden for its architecture and maybe Frankfurt if you are interested in a more "international" flair.

I visited and loved Bavaria and its castles, especially Nueschwanstein. Munich is splendid and rich. Berlin is young, fabulous, tons ans tons of activities and historic sites. Going around Salsburg next.

I am from Hamburg and even though I like Berlin, Kiel, and Osnabrueck a lot, I truly believe Hamburg has everything. We have lovely seasons, the sun sets at 10 o'clock at night during the summer and I have never seen a greener city in Germany. People are friendly, not nosy, and there is something for everybody - great history, great buildings, clubs, bars, shopping centers etc etc. We even have a couple of beaches ;-)

Alwin, I had to laugh a bit when I read your post. Dialect? In Hamburg? Haha, the real hardcore sailor men might have a bit of a dialect, but believe me, most of us don't! :) We are pretty close to Hanover and Hochdeutsch :)

rio-blanco
No, Alwin you do not like our liberal mind.
Weather in Hamburg sunshine, blue sky, 7°C, humble bees are flying, crocus are in flower. THE SPRING HAS ARRIVED
Still in snow storm Alwin?

I lived and worked in Berlin for seven years, and that city is GREAT! I don't deny Hamburg its state of the "northern capital". It sure is, but I'm not much of a sailor, and I don't like their dialect. I'm more of a Prussian, although I'm native Bavaria.

If you don't bother that there's no coast nowhere around, Berlin is THE place to go. It has lots of culture, from the classical stuff (loads of museums there) to the most basic (concerts by some good, but unknown bands, in small clubs, even in cellars). Once you've lived there for a while, you'll get to know the good locations that are to your taste, and you'll make friends there - I think - faster than on the coast once people notice that you're not a tourist but are there to stay.

Just like Berlin is a good place to live, Munich is a good place to visit. You must have seen it and its surroundings at least once in a lifetime, and for more than just one week.

I'm not an anthropoligist, and I wouldn't necessarily say that landscape shapes people, but from my year-long experiences in both Munich and Berlin, I'd conclude the following:

Around Berlin, there is nothing than the Brandenburg plains. So people stick closer together and are more friendly towards each other, even if you don't recognize their friendlyness at first glance. If Germans in general have the reputation of being very direct in their speech (but friendly in their hearts), then Berliners are Über-Germans.

Around Munich, there's a landscape with lots of hills and mountains, and you can always escape into the countryside if you so desire. Strangely enough, not many Münchners do that, but stay in the confinements of their city, although on some days the Alps look as near as you'd just need to stretch your hand and touch them. But obviously, the beautiful vista is enough for them, and they keep their secret longings in their hearts. Like Berliners, Münchners talk a lot; but Münchners talk about the weather, Berliners about their soul.

So much for the two cities I know best, from an "inside" point of view. But in general, I think every major city in Germany is worth visiting when you come as a tourist. They all have their different styles, and there's preserved architecture from the middle ages almost everywhere around. (I think the Rheinländers won't like it that I didn't mention Cologne [Köln], but sorry, I've never been there. I've met people from the Rhineland, however, and thought them to be some of my kind.)

There's a small city on the Danube where I lived for a short time and fell in love with. It's Regensburg (Ratisbon) in Bavaria. For a tourist, worth a day trip when you are in Nürnberg (Nuremberg) or somewhere else near. Its old architecture and the cathedral (Regensburger Dom) are worth seeing, especially in summer. The Romans must have known why they settled there when they conquered the Germans.

But there is actually no good city in Germany when there's the drizzling rain we have so often. So I don't quite understand why you like Hamburg so much, where they have more rainy days than in most other parts of Germany.

Hi, I am from Regensburg in Bavaria.
Not only the landscape here is wonderful, but also the lovely old town from Regensburg.
It is so nice that it became world heritage from the UNESCO 2 years ago.
Hundreds of years ago it was the main city of the German Empire, and it also exists since 2000 years ago, when Romans built their camp here.
You can visit and see this great history of the city everywhere.
Since Regensburg is world heritage, you here very much English in the streets, with most people coming from Britain.
You really should visit our lovely city and other great sights in Bavaria, for example the "Neuschwanstein"-Castle.
