Germany - Biometric Passport? |
For a German citizen, how long does it take to get a biometric passport. Also, how long is the process. Today is 11/24; can he get one issued to come visit the U.S. before the end of December? Thanks.

Depends. He can say it's urgent to speed up the process. Current waiting times are something between 3 and 6 weeks; but usually, they work as fast as they can. It also depends where he lives: From smaller villages, you lose at least a week for the transportation of the passport. In "before-biometric" times, I once had one issued within four days; but I made it urgent, and I lived in Berlin, where these things are produced. And I showed up with a flight reservation.
I'm quite sure he can get his biometric in passport in time; but doesn't he have a non-biometric one that hasn't yet expired? They are still valid. He doesn't need that biometric thing.

Well, then: No worries.
- The old passports are valid up to the expiry date that's imprinted in them.
- Germans don't need a visa for the US when they come as tourists.
Problem solved, nothing to do. He'll have to fill in a silly questionnaire on the plane, and that's all. (So far. They'll change the system to online applications soon, but haven't yet, afaik.) |

Takes some sort of 6 to 8 weeks, especially when holidays are ahead. |

Normal biometric passports need around 6-8 weeks, but there is a "fast track".
You have to pay more (I'm not exactly sure how much), but then the passport will be ready within 1 week.
