Why not go to both countries? Both are beautiful and interesting. But if I had to choose I would go to Germany. Bratwurst, Currywurst, Reibekuchen, Altbier, Weissbier etc.

Germany is more relaxing and the people there are less intrusive. Personally, I have had much better cuisine in Bavaria than anywhere in Italy. The castles are great to visit, but take some time to get to generally, some exceptions though.

Italy is more universally appealing with so much to offer in terms of history and art, whereas with Germany it is almost necessary to have a previous connection with the county. The pace in Rome, my favorite Italian city, is a bit frantic and makes it hard to really enjoy things. Venice is less like that.

Basically, it depends on what you want.

Kind of depends on what you are looking for and what kind of travel experience you want to have. If it were my choice I would choose Italy - but it's your trip, not mine. Each country has its own culture and identity and has lots to offer. In Germany you will find The Black Forest, grand Castles, the Rhine River, BEER, Cuckoo Clocks, The Romantic Road. You also have the city of Munich, Frankfurt, Berlin.
Germany can be very outdoorsy and offer some good hiking opportunities. Check out http://www.cometogermany.com/

Italy has the cities of Venice, Florence and Rome (to name a few), lots of art and architecture, pizza, gelato, WINE, beautiful countryside and beautiful people. I think Italy is a bit easier to explore - especially if you have a rail pass and maybe rent a car if you want to visit Tuscany and the hill towns. Check out http://www.italiantourism.com/

You need to decide what your interests are and start planning! Both countries have a lot to offer. Like someone else said before me, if you have the time, visit both and visit Switzerland or Austria in between.

Wherever you go, you're going to have a great time!

Both are amazing, but if you like soccer this year is the world cup, that is the best time for travel to Germany, but Italy is so exited.
