If you do not have a Drivers License you will have to go thru the whole driver learning and testing. It is required that you attend driving school, to learn the written, then have to have so many hours of practical driving such as Autobahn Driving, driving country side, city driving and night driving. There are three written test, one for the signs, one for environmental driving and the drivers test. If you past the sign test and the environment test but fail the drivers test, you only have to take the drivers test all over again. You can take the tests in English and study the test in English. Now to finish it you have to take the road test where a certified drivers test from TUV will give you the test in the car and its not one of those around the block test. You have to parallel park, start and stop on a hill, the right of way so on and so forth. If you only drive an automatic then the test will be made so and your license state you can only drive an automatic. All this can cost up to 1000 Euro maybe more. If you have your Canadian drivers license reinstated you can drive on that license for 120 days then it will have to transfered over. Depending on where you live in Germany you might still have to take a written test but not the road test

Anne
well being from Germany I really cannot recommand to do your licence here, if your licence expired you are considered to not have any, which means that you will go through all the theory and the driving hours and all the tests, which is not only time consuming but also f***ing expensive, considering 1000€ is really optimistic, the price depends on where you do the licence, how well you do in driving and tests and if your examer (practical) is a nice one, as it depends on him / her what he / she asks you to do, parking...

greets Anne

if you do the canadian one again, and get an international one with it, you might be lucky and can just accredit and assign it

I heard it's pretty pricey, around 1000 euro. You have to do a certain number of theory hours before you go on the road. I'm from England and that's really different to our system, dunno how it compares to the Canadian system though. Could you not go to the embassy and just renew it there?

it would be alot cheaper to not get one, and take your chances with the polizei.
