No point waiting to go anyway...your German skills will improve immensely in just 3 weeks there anyway...I don't know what to tell you --If you are a guy you might really like the Deutsches Museum in Munich...If your a girl you would definintely like the shopping in the Pedestrian zone.......
Re..Allen's comments above... ---KaDeWe is a department store not a mall
and Munich is great year round....but he is right to visit the fernsehenturm...I did have lunch and get pretty wrecked in the television tower restaurant so that is cool and the views are great---360 degrees of Berlin... |

First of all, for the last 60 years Americans have been landing in Germany not being able to speak a word of German(including Elvis). So, if you have been studying German for a year already, you are doing good, and as another answer said your German skills will improve in the 3 weeks you will be visiting.
Now, where will you be going in Germany? Do you have any idea, or are you starting your plans now?
What to expect in Germany? Not 'The Sound of Music'. What should you go see? Depends on what you are interested in? I had a friend who was a fire fighter in Boston. When he came over to Germany he visited local fire departments and was very warmly welcomed. My brother came over to see the Formula One Auto Racing. Now if you are coming over for a visit to improve your German skills then you may wish to avoid the touristy places because all you will hear is English.
Now there are a lot of things to see in Germany, the cities(Great to WALK around in), the country side, castles, Rhine River, museums for every taste - in Berlin alone you could visit museums for 3 weeks and not see them all. I could go on and on, but I am sure some other Yahoo Answerer will provide you with detailed info and lists of must sees. My suggestion, buy a student train ticket good for a month of traveling in Germany. Pack lite, with very comfortable walking shoes. Make a list of cities you want to visit and see. For example; fly into Frankfurt, then over to Mainz(on the Rhine river), then up to Köln, then Hannover(where they speak 'Die HochDeutsch), and then maybe Hamburg, then over to Berlin, and then Dresden or Leipzig(to 'experience' the former East Germany). Trust me you will improve your German very quickly.
Food? Well(doch) in Germany, in the major cities anyway you will find all kinds of food. From the American cuisine art ala McD to almost every Asian speciality, and of course your typical German schnitzel and noodles. What I still miss after all these years is a Waffle House, that kind of restuarant you will NOT find in Germany. And just so you know, do not expect the 'Hi, I'm Betsy your waitress' routine in Germany.
I have to get to work now. If you want more detailed info you can email me. Not the first time I have helped students arrange trips to to Germany. |

I been to Germany last week so I suggest that you should go to Berlin and visit the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, Checkpoint Charlie, Scloss Charolettenburg, The TV tower in East Berlin, KaDeWe (the largest mall in Europe), and Kaiser Wildhelm's church. Since Germany has a lot of turkish living in the cities, I suggest that you should eat a doner kebab or the traditional curry Bratwurst. Frankfurt: be careful. Muchen: Only good in Oktoberfest. |
