If you are happy with an online course, check out http://www.deutsche-welle.com Very good resource for learning German, and the best - it is free!
And apart from talking to Germans pick up DVDs - Hollywood blockbusters dubbed over in German, with most you got the option to switch between the original English and the dubbed German and often you can watch dubbed German with English subtitles. Great way to pick up vocabulary with almost zero effort.
If you give the name of the town you are moving to you might get specific recommendations for language schools in your area. |

Congratulations on your moving. Germany is wonderful. I lived there myself for 4 years.
I still speak well enough to carry on a conversation and I learned from living there (obviously) and also from my classes at the Goethe Institute.
There are many good suggestions here already, but this is where i studied conversational German. Good luck! |

Honestly . . .
I got out of the army and winged it.
I have taken 6 weeks of intensive German at a private language school until I was thrown out for cussing my teacher up and down. That cost me 500 DM back then. I felt good. My wife was pi$$ed.
I went for half a year more minus than plus at kolping. It was a waste.
I took a test and did a vocation as a IT person. There were no jobs back then and Internet was like not . . . "Unemployed, but no benefits" I paid for it myself.
I worked at a city swimming pool as a lifeguard helper for a summer season. I am from Hawaii.
To do the vocational training with pay, I had to work for the germans for 3 years. I then did a retrain. A normal vocation paycheck was not enough to support my family.
During those years, I learn "construction site" german. After three years, I had earned the right to a retrain. My boss offered me a pay raise to increase my retrain 60% check if I did a vocation as a landscaper with his company.
Over these years, I have been involved with soccer, judo, basketball, music, cooking, computer school, landscaping school, you name it and my vocabulary grew.
I knew a russian linguist who wanted to learn German. He worked part time at McDonald's (german one) and took German courses. That is how he learned german.
I have technically had 6 weeks of "formal" german.
As a military dependent, I am not sure how you would swing a job with the Germans these days. Your world will be pretty much taken care off on the base. Depending on what base you are on, you may never have to speak German.
I have heard of people (dependents) never leaving the post in Stuttgart. They take the bus to the Kasern and live there. The next time they leave the place is when they go back to the USA.
As far as my experience with the military folks, I was in the military too. Very few soldiers and dependants ever learn German. I was forced into a situation where I have to learn German. When I left the military, I wanted to cut all ties. I did not want to be dependant on the ID, PX and Commissary. |

The cheapest way: take a course at "Volkshochschule" "Deutsch für Ausländer". |

Im Sure they have Classes up there at a Collage that well teach your German
And no i dont think working at a restaurant well be a good first job if you dont know how to speak German already.
cuz you wont understand everything they say when they take your order which well get on there nerves with all the confusen and you wont know how to write in german when you give them there bill
You Moving Cuz someone you live with has to move there for Work Reasons or something ?
Cuz if your just moving there to move there, you may wanna stay where you are and learn how to speak and spell in German b4 you go |

Try the Volkshochschule. It is a low cost and they have tons of classes. You will meet people from all over the world.
If you reallyw ant to learn, you need to combine taking a class with your daily life as well as watching t.v. in German.

The Berlitz language course is the numero Uno for learning German. Also when you get there watch a lot of TV because you get an insight into colloquial German. Recommended viewing, Alarm fĂĽr Cobra 11 on RTL on Thursday evenings at 20:15 CET. If you are into soaps then Gute Zeite, Schlecht Zeite on RTL is pretty good too. |
