Yes, I've been there quite often, mainly to change trains between where I used to live and Berlin though. The station is a beautiful (to me, I like that sort of thing...) example of Communist reworking of a 19th century building, it always used to have a great model railway running in the main concourse at Christmas too.
The city itself was pretty ugly and polluted, but I haven't been there for 4 years so maybe it's been tidied up a bit since. A nice day trip for you would be to Quedlingburg, a medieval city about 40 miles to the West of Halle. You should also go and see if they've finished rebuilding Leipzig yet. You're also close to Weimar, which is definitely worth a visit, as is Erfurt just a little further down the line. Check the links below, I've put the English site where possible.
