Has David Hasselhoff's drinking video affected his popularity in Germany?

i doubt it...he is still the "sweetheart " over here (germany that is).he still has lots of media coverage in the tabloits

The whole concept of David Hasselhoff being a superstar in Germany is pretty much of an urban myth widespread in the US.

Hasselhoff was a one-hit wonder in Germany at some point back in the... (I want to say early 90s? coinciding with the "Baywatch" launch, I think), with his song "Looking for Freedom" in the no. 1 spot on the pop charts for a very long summer. But that is pretty much his entire claim-to-fame right there.

He hasn't had ANY hit records since.
If it is true that he has a tour coming up, at any rate Eventim (Ticketmaster equivalent) are not selling tickets for it.
"Knight Rider" is indeed still being syndicated, but it is only shown on Das Vierte, the 22nd-biggest cable channel. Compare this with other 80s stalwarts like "The A-Team", still showing on RTL2 (7th-biggest channel) or "Magnum, PI" on Super RTL (9th-biggest channel).

I suppose people remember him and he still has enough name recognition to make it into the tabloids, but the idea of his having a monster following in Germany is blown way out of proportion.

So... he's been drinking, then?

In reference to the post that says David H's popularity in Germany is a myth...I must disagree. I always see his face plastered on the gossip and celebrity magazine covers in Germany. Whether people admire his hairy chest is another thing all together but he definately has media presence in Germany that he doesn't have in the US.

I've lived in Germany for 14 years now, and I can't think of a single person who is even remotely interested in David Hasselhoff. He appears somtimes in gossip/celebrity magazines, but only because of his drunken escapades. People misbehaving is always an interesting subject in any country. But otherwise, he could disappear from the planet and nobody here would notice.

David Hasselhoff is still VERY popular here in Germany. He even has a short concert tour scheduled for this summer...really scary for those of us who remember him in the role of young Dr. Snapper Forester during the very early days of The Young and the Restless! He is/was much more than a one-hit wonder here in Germany. Knight Rider still runs here in syndication. As far as this incident goes, it can only help his career by getting him in all the gossip magazines for a week or two.

Nobody here is really interested in David Hasselhoff. The gossip magazines write about everyone who had some type of fame a hundred years ago....
Yeah and writing abour Alco-Dave and his fat kid, or as a matter of fact any tv star who has alcohol problems or has a weight problem or anything, that's just something to write about.
