I went there once to a conference. We got lost and drove all over Mannheim looking for the army base there. After an hour of driving around, we finally found it. Needless to say we were late.

Mannheim is an industrial town. Heidelberg is just a few miles from Mannheim. Heidelberg is a beautiful old city that was realitively untouched during WWII. Mannheim was flattened.

I have been there. I lived near Mannheim (Heidelberg), and it is a nice sized city with plenty to do, not so much to see as it was mostly leveled during the war. The inner city does not have street addresses. Instead, it is a chessboard design, so trying to figure out where you are going is fun. There is a lot of interesting stuff around Mannheim, in the smaller towns- Heidelberg (not small), Schwetzingen, Speyer.
