Has anyone spent a period of time in Germany?

I go to university in the U.S. and I got an offer to do an internship in Germany for a period of time, but I'm not that sure about it yet since I've never been there before. I'm also Jewish and my family is from Israel originally. I'm a little nervous about going too but I do like new experiences. My question is mainly for people who have spent time in Germany and/or know a lot about the country or are German. Is Germany a nice place to visit and spend time in these days? Are the people generally friendly and nice to foreigners or not? Is there anything I should avoid during my time there if I decide to go? Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have been to Germany as a student, a tourist, was stationed there in the Army, and recently worked there at a German school for over a year. I suspect you will have no problems. People are friendly and helpful to foreigners. No one will know you are Jewish unless you tell them. My suggestion is you learn as much German as you can before you go (even though most Germans have more than a working knowledge of English, it just helps to read signs and basic stuff), and go enjoy yourself. Germany is an amazing country, I love it.

You have nothing to worry about. There are some idiots left, who ignore history and still have a closed mind, but in general, Germans are very welcoming and it's a beautiful place to travel to.

You have a once in a lifetime opportunity! Take it!

Hi, I've spent a bit of time in Germany, in a few different cities. I like it there, I find that in certain cities the people are friendlier. If you have any particular place that you have in mind edit your question and let us know where. If I know much about the place I'll get back to you! I liked pretty much all the places I went to.

It is a shame that the German travel site is infiltrated by stupid trolls who are not able to give good answers. They just thumb down others because of their lack of ability to answer questions.
You will get some good answers of people who are keeping answering inspite of those damn trolls. I usually do not answer in the German section any more although I am a German. You will be able to notice it on the thumbs downs.
You really should not face any problems in general if your itinerary is limited to the western part of Germany.
Why I tell that? It can be assumed that the same amount of idiots who discredit regular contributors discredit visitors.
But those are only a unnoticed minority.
You can be sure to be cordially welcomed as tourist.

You ask this question twice in different words. You should be lucky they gave you an internship. There are German kids trying to get internships, and they need them to graduate from the universities especially the kids in the university of applied science programs (Fachhochschule). Normally, they need two internships plus a third for their "thesis". If you are so worried about being sent off to a camp, maybe you should look for somewhere else to do an internship. The streets of Germany are probably a thousand times safer than the streets of the USA. I have lived in Germany for over 20 years now. I am from Hawaii. I studied in California and lived on the East Coast of the USA. You probably will have the best time of your life. While you are enjoying yourself, I would say you should concentrate on your internship and learn something. Bring cash so you can travel by train and see the rest of Europe on your weekends and down time. GO SEE Germany and Europe because you may not have another chance. Make a few good friends who will want to have you back again.

In general (I backpacked a lot around the world), people are as nice to you, as you are to them. Germany is a place, where the people in the big cities are international and in the rural areas more regional. The majority of People are friendly, open and approachable.
I would say, on a scale of 1 -10, with 10 the least racist and most friendliest, Germany is a high ten, compared to the USA with about a low 5.
