Help with German Grammar when talking about doing things at places using command form.? |
I need some help. I have been trying to learn German, and I have typed up some basic sentences about places near a German town a friend of mine lives in. I have realized they are horribly wrong. I hear that the expression "am" is only used with bodies of water. If someone could help me, fix the sentences, or just tell me when to use, "am", "in", or "im" when using command form, it would be appriciated. Here are the sentences I have:
Übernachtet am Night-and-Day! (name of a hotel)
Übernachtet am Stuttgart Apartments!
Isst am Swabian Food! Ihre Spezialität ist Käserspätzel.
Spielt am die Stuttgart Spielbank!
Habt Spaß am die Wilhelm Zoo!
Lernt am die Porsche Museum!
Lockert am die Neckar River Bootstour!
Viel Spaß! |

> Übernachtet am Night-and-Day! (name of a hotel)
"im", as it's a room or closed area.
> Übernachtet am Stuttgart Apartments!
"in den" --> it's plural, so therefore.
> Isst am Swabian Food! Ihre Spezialität ist Käserspätzel.
Esst schwäbisches Essen! Ihre Spezialität sind Käsespätzle. (A noodle comes seldom alone, so therefore Käsespätzle are plural like spaghetti. -- No preposition in the first sence, as it's no Dativ, but Akkusativ, fourth case. Doesn't require "an" or "am".)
> Spielt am die Stuttgart Spielbank!
"in der". See above: closed room or area.
> Habt Spaß am die Wilhelm Zoo!
"im Wilhelm-Zoo". See above.
> Lernt am die Porsche Museum!
"im". See above.
> Lockert am die Neckar River Bootstour!
"lockert" means "to loosen", like "to loosen a screw". I don't understand that sentence, maybe your translation engine made something completely wrong.
"Fahrt mit einem Boot auf dem Neckar" would be a correct German phrase. (You don't add the word "river" to rivers, as Germans are supposed to know the names of German rivers, but the gender of rivers is another topic: DER Neckar, DER Rhein, but: DIE Donau.)
---
> Therefore it is correct to say "Ihre Spezialität ist Käsespätzle."
I allow myself to disagree with Rio. Spätzle is and has always been a plural word. You can say "Ihre Spezialität ist Pizza" about Italian restaurants, no problem with that, although the correct phrase would be "Ihre Spezialität sind Pizzen".
Und das mit den Bayern hab' ich überhört...
The verb may be governed by the subject theoretically, but languages changes, and in that context, it has changed very much. Reading the "Zwiebelfisch" may be interesting, but not really useful. |

Alwin is right so far and if it comes to the Käsespätzle issue both are right. However if you want to have it right by grammar then Rio is right if you more interested into slang then Alwin is correct. Now about the problem Alwin created with the rivers. It is called die Donau because "die" refers to the word "au" (=Aue) in Donau but this is really complex and I am running out of links to add to the sources. |

This Bavarian guy is not completely wrong, although it must be said, that it is difficult for a Bavarian to speak German. But it must be mentioned, that there is a small bug.
Alwin is wrong, when he says "Ihre Spezialität sind Käsespätzle. (A noodle comes seldom alone, so therefore Käsespätzle are plural like spaghetti.)" In German the verb is governed by the subject and subject is "Spezialität" and that is singular. Therefore it is correct to say "Ihre Spezialität ist Käsespätzle." . |

All answers are fine so far. German has tons and tons of rules, all unclear and subject to the never ending Rechtschreibung.
It will be best for you to find a Sprachtandem in your area. You will be able to meet up with a German, who will be able to help you. |
