How can I become a German citizen?

I want to become a German citizen. I'm Swedish (from Uppsala Sweden) and I want to move to Germany permanently and become a citizen after I finish my university studies. Also my boyfriend is German and lives in Munich. How long would it take for me to become a German citizen and what is the procedure to start it?

As another EU citizen you can just come here and work and live. So you don't actually need the citizenship other than for voting.

To get German citizenship, you will have to live in Germany at least 8 years (see below), speak fluently or near-fluently German and be able to financially support yourself. Also you must say that you respect the German constitution (Grundgesetz) and steer clear of a criminal record (no robbing banks please). Don't worry about a parking violation though, they mean being in prison for more than six months or beeing on parole more than two years.

About you as a Swedish citizen, no one will really make a fuss of any of this as these rules are mostly designed to curb an influx of islamic militants, or stopping the practice of many families originating in the near east to import illiterate and scared wives to keep as prisoners at home.
So you are not really what they are looking for :D

The 8 years: In the case of EU citizen applying for German citizenship, especially if you marry a German, the local AuslÀnderbehörde can decide to waive at least a part of that time, so ask nicely and perhaps you can get it much earlier than that, say three or four years or so. It's their discrete decision though, you can't push it.

How to start the procedure: When you settle in with your boyfriend, you need to register with the Einwohnermeldeamt. Your boyfriend will know where it is; he had ot register there too. Only when you are registered does the clock start to tick for you. Aks them how to further go about it, they will know.

Why do you want to become a german citizen? You are EU-citzen of the old EU-countries. You simply move to Germany, look for a job and live here 8 (years I believe, but possibly 6) and then you ask for german citizenship, but why?
Greetings from Hamburg, Germany

Marry your boy friend. After that you need to wait 3 to 5 years to get the citizenship.

> Also my boyfriend is German and lives in Munich.

Bad. Very bad. So you can't join me and hand me your headband as a band and bond of marriage... -- And I was so cheerfully hoping!

Couldn't you think that over with your boyfriend? -- Okay, I don't wanna be run over by a BMW run wild, so...

Why don't you just come here and try? Working for BMW has never been a good choice anyway. There are nice cities other than Munich.

if he marries you you become one thru marriage

Your procedure is to wait about 8 years to become a citizen of Germany unless you have an immediate family member who is German.
