I am an American living in Frankfurt. I found a yahoo group (Frankfurt In Motion) that is made up of English speaking Expats here in the city. They have tons of events and activities planned and by going to some of them I've made some good friends already in just a few weeks. I would search yahoo groups for your city.
Here is one I just found: (gea is the name of the group)

Hi,
The "Amerika Haus" and American Consulate in Munich are great sources of information and for making contact with other Americans. A good bet also is the American Womens' Club of Munich. Your wife will be able to meet with American as well as women of other nationalities (including Germans) who belong to this Club. A German class at the Goethe Institute or Volkshochschule will also bring her into contact with many nationalities. When her German gets a bit better, she will make friends on her own perhaps starting with the neighbors. It is true that many Germans speak English but many are very shy about speaking and will be very pleased and more helpful is she can manage a bit of German. Hope this helps. |

i think she should learn to speak german, at least the basic stuff were she could express herself a little bit. why not ask your friends or relatives, who can speak and understand english, to stay or take her out or visit them and teach her bit by bit. she can buy perhaps a translation book. also she should be observant of her surroundings and ask what a certain thing or word is in german, like translating. she should be confident and really determined to learn and must not be ashamed if she cannot understand something. everything is a learning process and everyone is never old enough to learn new things. always encourage her in every step of her learning |

Hi!
I am German and can tell you that nearly all Germans speak English anyway. So don't worry. I'm sure she won't have trouble communicating.
But learning German will certainly make her feel more at home. She could join a club- people are very open to new members- especially if they're foreigners (and therefore interesting :)). |
