We aren't. We ousted the CSU government in the last state elections, and wait a while: We'll oust the federal government, too, this September. Being conservative is not such a bad thing. After all, Bavaria is the only state in Germany that has environmental protection written in its constitution, and we brought the Greens into parliament, back in the 1980ies. And the Federal Government heavily depends on Bavarian voters. We're something like Texas.
---
Otto, I must disagree with you. When the Greens were voted into the Bremen Parliament, they were something like the "Freie Wähler" that nowadays make big gains in Bavaria. (The northern "alternative list" parties never were like the southern Greens.) And it's simply unfair to compare the Hesse to the Bavarian elections back then, as you pretty well know that they're scheduled to a fixed date. So it was BY CHANCE that the Greens made it into the Hessian parliament earlier than into the Bavarian one. |

It is the same anywhere in the world. Rural areas tend to be more conservative. People like traditions. Why shouldn't they keep them instead of bending over black-wards to accommodate a mish-mash quasi-culture that defines places like Berlin? Too many flavours spoil a meal;) |

> We aren't. We ousted the CSU government in the last state elections
Oh, big deal. CSU is still the largest group in the parliament, they just lost their unbeatable 50%+ majority they had for the past 40 years.
> We'll oust the federal government, too, this September.
Bavaria is not Germany.
> we brought the Greens into parliament, back in the 1980ies.
Well, the first time the Greens came into a state parliament was in 1979 in Bremen in Northern Germany, not Bavaria. In 1978, when the Greens failed more or less slightly at the 5% hurdle in other states (Hamburg 4.5%, Lower Saxonia: 3.9%), the Greens in Bavaria had a miserable 1.8%.
The first Green secretary in a state was Fischer, 1985 in Hesse, not Bavaria (it took another year for the Greens to be voted into Bavaria's parliament in 1986.)
The first green federal secretary and vice chancelor was again Fischer in 1998 - when the majority of Bavarians voted as usual CSU, not the Greens or social democrats which made up the government then.
You might be referring to the federal elections in 1983, but that's quite funny since in the previous elections 1979 one of the reasons the Greens didn't make it was that people voted social democrats just to be safe the Bavarian conservative Strauss, who'd be a chapter of Bavarian selfishness on his own, would not become German chancelor.
> We're something like Texas.
Now, that's right. Texas brought the world Bush jr. Hooray.
Regarding the original question:
> why are rural bavarians so conservative in contrast to the majority of germans I'm more refering to social conservatorism.
I guess the main reason is that it's rather easy to stick to what your ancestors did if it seems everybody likes you for doing this. Plus everybody likes to be slightly different (as long as there are enough others who are the same different as you are).
Take Disneyland as an example: What's being portraied there as "Germany" is actually Bavarian culture. No surprise to me that some Bavarians think they rule the world, or at least Germany (like Alwin showed so well above), and like to display that as colorful as possible. |

it's not different from a comparison of LA and the American Bible belt.
you will find conservatives in any country, Bavarians are just more vocal about it.
Munich is quite 'liberal", depending where you look |

Answering this is much like the US and other places where city and rural thinking is different so you get more liberals in the city and more conservatism in rural areas but the population density is usually in the cities so thought often they win due to that but on a map more areas chose the opposite. Sad when a few cities dictate everyone. |
