How do I get from Munich to Neuschwanstein castle by public transport?

I'm going to Neuschwanstein castle on August 24th, does anyone know how I would get there from Munich via public transport, and how much this would cost?

Thanks very much!

It shouldn't be that expensive. I would recommend what I did on my trip last year-- Train to Fuessen, then take the bus to Hohenschwangau (the town). The bus stops are right next to the train station. For train/bus info, visit www. bahn.de and follow the link for "Internat. Guests".

In fact, I ran a timetable search: http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en?ld=212.207&seqnr=2&ident=9m.0947207.1184862186&rememberSortType=minArrival&REQ0HafasScrollDir=1

The earliest train from Munich leaves at 4:57 AM, but it gets you to Hohenschwangau by about quater after 8. You want to get there early-- the ticket office opens at 8, and it doesn't take long for long lines to form. You can also book tickets in advance online for a small fee; check out http://www.hohenschwangau.de/546.0.html
Tickets seem to run around 20 euros.

On a side note, I would highly recommend visiting the castle of Hohenschwangau as well as Neuschwanstein. It's neat in its own way, and both castles are a nice way to fill up a day. Also, you might want to consider just going down the night before, staying overnight at a local Gasthof, then coming back-- it can save a bit of hassle. (I recommend Haus Weiher-- http://www.bensbauernhof.com/pensionweiher.html . Nice little place run by an older couple that's a reasonable walk from the town of Hohenschwangau & the castles. That said, there's plenty of decent Gasthause & Gasthofe nearby.)

Have fun, & good luck!!! I wish I was going, too!!!

Try checking out this page, it give you directions via public transportation. It also gives you ticket information.

You can also purchase your train tickets online, www.bahn.de

Hello! Schloss Neuschwanstein is located in Schwangau im Allgäu. Best thing would be to take a train from München (Munich) to Schwangau, maybe the Rathaus. And then take a taxi to the castle. The train ticket would be around 20 Euros (approx. 27 dollars). Unfortunately I cannot tell you how much a cab costs though. To check out train ticket/prices go here (you can book online too):

Not a clue, although I do know those trains will take you ANYWHERE in Germany!

I just wanted to let you know how envious I am. I absolutely love Germany. You'll have a wonderful trip! :)

Forget it, it will take ages and I assume you will be vacationing in Germany and dont have ages of time to waste. Much easier and better to book a trip e.g. from Munich to there. They have something like the gray line bus here in Munich. They will take you there directly and show you around and explain things
