The answers above did say most of it already.
Depends on where you are going, and it is similar to the US.

But adults are wearing seldomly shorts in public in the summer. At home yes, or going out to the lake, BBQ etc. But often they wear pants to go everywhere else.

The baseball cap is getting more popular in Europe, but it's not as common as in the US. And most Germans would take the cap off inside.

T-Shirts with a message, from a cam, with some ad on it aren't as common as over here.

Footwear might be different as well. Flipflops aren't as common as over here, and you never wear them for a "serious" occassion or even for a more formal thing.

It's very nice of you that you like to assimilate, but a German will probably see very easily that you are American. Which is just a fact, not a bad thing. :-)

Don't be scared by Jenny's posting on top; that's what I wrote about Germans getting politico in another post here. Just dress casual, that means, we wear the same clothes as you wear every day. Jeans and shirts will be good enough. As I'm writing this, I wear black Jeans and a chequered "lumberman's shirt" ("Holzfällerhemd") and no shoes (why should I in my private office?). If I'd add a pair of shoes, that would be good enough for, let's say, a lesson at universitiy or a job in the back office of some company. In the front office, I'd make sure that I wear suit and (hell, I hate it) tie.

Many people actually wear suit and tie, but sneakers beneath. It all depends on the color. Black or grey sneakers are alright, but many men still prefer leather shoes, although they give them blisters on the big toe and on the heels. But, well: There is a German proverb:
"Wer schön sein will muss leiden."
("Keeping up a beautiful image means suffering.")

The dress in Germany is very similar to the U.S. Usually the colors and styles that are fashionable now in the U.S. were fashionable in Germany 2 to 3 years ago. The best way to fit in is to buy some clothing while you are there.

Germans and Americans dress similarily, but Germans tend to follow the fashion more than Americans. You won't see people wearing shabby clothes as much as here in America.
That is one of the main things I like about Germans and Europeans in general is that they take a good care of their appearance.

they dress about the same as you in the states if not they may be a little more into ''trendy fashion'' such as the big goggles and getting all prettied up just to go shop for food...dont worry about it you will be fine....just bring lots of clothes because they are expensive here....example is Wrangler jeans here cost 80 euros....this is about 100 american dollars.

BYB's suck Saddam'sPen..
Depends where you are going and what you want to dress like. Just like the US, there are a whole range of clothing options. You can be Paris Hilton, Avril Lavigne, Kelly Osbourne, or just about anything in between.

I will say that you don't see a lot of branded clothes (like Nike jackets or Juicy pants) and yes, they ABSOLUTELY wear tennis shoes when the look fits.

You won't, due to the American imperialism we all dress the same as you do lol

Simply put they pay a little more attention to their appearance than Americans. So I would dress a little more conservatively and nicer for a while until you get the hang of things...Then you can get some nice stuff there....Frankly I can spot American tourists a mile away and it gives me the willies, it's embarrassing...Leave your flip flops, cut off jeans and tank tops at home...IMHO....

You can wear in Germany anything what you want. They are having nice stores, nice clothes, nice fashion outfits. And also you can see so many good styled people in Germany too. They are having good taste for fashion.

Western dress is very similar world wide. It is no longer true that german women don't wear sneakers - I see them all the time. Shorts are relatively uncommon for women, that is true.

You'll be fine.

They dress the same as you. A lot of fashion starts there and migrates here or vice versa. You need to bring the clothes you normaly wear for the season you are going.

Hi this is Mag from germany, as we have no school uniforms we just wear what we like, be aware that summers here can also be very cold so bring your socks and coat, usually we love slacks, sexy shirts as well as oversized baseball shirts, just everything, at warm days we love skirts, short or long, everything is o.k. germany now is a mix of cultures and so are the clothes.
Have a nice time Mag

If you start with jeans an sweatshirt or T- shirt it is ok.
Clothe in Germany are costly

that won't be a problem, they dress pretty much as we do..

You never see German women wearing shorts and t-shirts. That will brand you as an uncouth American every time. They don't usually wear tennis shoes, either. I don't care though. I still wear my shorts, t-shirts and tennis shoes anyway. Sometimes even all at the same time ;-)) !
