Samian's Tenth Account

How do you think Berlin will vote tomorrow on the religious education referendum?

I'm an American, and I read this story on the BBC News website:
http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,,4204156,00.html

I read somewhere on an Economist article that the referendum would probably fail, since Berlin has such a very high percentage of nonreligious Germans.

But I was wondering what you think is going to happen regarding this vote?

Religion is part of the German school curriculum on reasons having to do with totalitary regimes. The very young BRD wanted to give no chance to totalitary ways of thinking, and thus wanted to guarantee that every child heard a "normal" version of their katechism in school, so that at least they heard a different version, if the provider of the rest of their religious education provided totalitaristic or crazy views only (see Exorcisms and the like).

The problem now is that there are many religions in Germany, but not often enough children to make it worthwile to hire a specific teacher for each religion. "Ethics" as a subject seemed to be the perfect solution, but many kids having a religion that there was a teacher for rather want to take Ethics, and many parents of kids needing to take Ethics are strictly against the kids "indoctrination" with information on philosophy and other religions.

In my opinion, it would be great for everyone to have both. Lessons in their religion and lessons in Ethics. I had both. I loved it. It made us all think and ask questions.

Germany should follow the example of France.
Religion has nothing to do in a classroom in the 21st century!

Bluebeard's Wife
Religion has no place in the classroom, in my opinion. I'm wary of it even in private schools. Religion should be practiced in private, not in school.
