It is about 200 km, approx. 2 1/2 hours drive by car.

If you take the train go to this page to check out everything:

I already looked for you and the trip would take about 2 hours and cost 34 Euros!

Your best bet would be renting a car. You can get there much faster then by train. Don't miss out on a nice high speed ride on the Autobahn.
In Dresden I would recommend sticking to the tram if you are planning to visit the city, as it is always very congested.
You should definitely take a drive to the outskirts of Dresden. I recommend Meissen and Saxon Switzerland (Saechsische Schweiz). The latter can be reached via a romantic steam boat ride (highly recommended) from Dresden in case you decide not to rent a car.
It will probably take you anywhere between 2h to 3h when you drive.

If you are not driving then the train is the best bet.
Punctual and good value (less than uk) takes about 4 hours.
Cheaper if you book in advance and leaves from Ost Bannhof I think.
