Well, how long are you planning on staying? As an American, you get an automatic 6 month tourist visa once you enter the country, but as for working, thats much much harder. Employment is quite high here, and its very difficult to get work visas. Usually you have to have a company who wants you to work here do all the stuff for you to get a visa. In addition, without a college degree, I'd say its very unlikely they would ever give you a work visa. Also, do you speak German? It's absolutely imperative to be able to get a job almost anywhere here. I'm also pretty sure that German law requires a job to be given to German/EU citizens over non-eu/german citizens if at all possible.
Anyway, it really depends on how long you want to stay here. You could look into getting a student visa which allows for limited working (90 days, or 180 half days per year), and since studying here is a lot cheaper than the US (tuition=500 euro a semester), it might be worth your while. You might also be able to find a job teaching english illegally, but it might be hard to arrange that.
