Hello,

I think 91 is roughly underestimated :-)

There must be a few hundred or even thousands. Virtually every village has a small castle.

We have to look at the definition of 'castle'. A Fest is a fort while a Festung is a fortress, a burg is a castle but this expression includes mansions and palaces (Schloss) as well as fortified houses. My quick count comes to 230 of these that are open to the public. There are many more that are ruins or in private hands. Just to make life more difficult - Burg Drachenfels is a ruin that is open to the public. There are others. Here are some links http://www.germancastles.com/

For my knowlegede 91, also when there are different definitions of castles.

@Capinero: I went by castles not incl. Palasts. A castle which was meant a military headquater an home of the rulers of different states. Therefore I do not think that 91 is underestimates. The most castles you will find in Uk and Scotland. Many more than in Germany.
