Not sure if I understand what payphone in Berlin is, but usually public phones in Germany accept either coins, or phone cards. There are some that accept credit cards though, but I don't suggest you to use them. If you want to pay with coins- make sure that you have a lot of 10 or 20 cent coins, because such phone doesn't give any change. Otherwise, the phone will eat your 2 Euro coin for 20 cents conversation and it won't give you any change.
Much cheaper would be to go to ALDI or Lidl and to buy a prepaid card for your cell/mobile. It will cost less than a call from a payphone, and ... you won't spend your time on looking for any payphones. |

You can use payphones either with coin money, a credit card, a prepaid calling card or - if you have the feature on your Maestrocard - the stored value on your Maestrocard.
If you want to use coins, you can use 5, ct, 10 ct, 20 ct, 50 ct, 1 € and 2 € coins. How much you have to put into the phone differs, but you can start with a rather low value and there will be a warning sound, when your money runs out, so you can put more money in. I would start with 50 ct, I think, it should last at least 2 minutes... mabye longer, I haven't used a payphone in quite a while.
You can buy calling cards at the post office, kiosks, Telekom shops or supermarkets, just don't confuse them with prepaid cards for mobile phones. You should look for a calling card issued by the Telekom, as they operate most payphones in Germany, not issued by one of the mobile network operators (like T-Mobile, Vodafone, e-plus, O2, blue, simyo whatever). But you have to be aware that you have to buy a specific amount, I believe it's 5 or 10 € at least and you cannot give them back or get the rest of the money back if you don't have any need for the card anymore.
If you use the stored value on your Maestrocard, you have to load it at an ATM with the wished amount of money. If you don't have a German Maestrocard then you will have to pay additional charges, and even if you have a German Maestrocard but don't go to the bank which issued that card, you will have to pay additional charges for loading. And it should be remembered that the money which you don't need for calling stays stored on that card as well...
In case you use those aforementioned cards, you slip them into the opening on the payphone designated for cards. On the phone's display there should appear how much money there is on the card which you can use to make a call. The fees will be deducted from that value. |
