How much should I bring to Munich? |
I'll be there from May 29-July 11. I'm staying with a host family, and all meals will be provided at home, unless I decide to go out for some reason. We are also provided with a train pass for the duration of the stay, and tickets to most museums.
Specific information I'm looking for: how much might I spend on my morning coffee?
cost of using the internet? (per minute or per hour)
cost of calling the US?
should I buy a calling card before I go, or would it be cheaper there?
Average cover charge for clubs? cocktails?
price of a newspaper?
postcards?
Any of this information would be helpful and anything else you can think of that might be a day-to-day sort of cost. Additional Details Thanks, Sanmigsean!
I don't drink sodas or beer...just water unless I'm going out, that's why I asked about mixed drinks.
Just to clarify, all those are the price converted to USD? not €, right? |

Coffee - $4
Internet is reasonable and you can get calling cards everywhere here - get it here
In Munich the cover for clubs is anwhere from $US 30 and up (usually more on the "up") Cocktails will run you $10 and up - one piece of advice is to drink beer, it is cheaper than Coke.
Newspaper $3
Postcards $1, stamp $2
Munich is unfortunately the most expensive city in Germany, and the US dollar is very weak at the moment. |

Do you have a notebook? free wifi-spots (uncoded private) are everywhere in munich. so you don't have to pay anything for internet. |

Morning coffee at a bakery or breakfast stall with some pastry: 4-6 EUR
Internet: 2 EUR per hour. Best place to call home is in an internet cafe. They can also sell you the cheapest calling cards. Look around the main train station.
American newspaper like Times or USA Today: 5-10 EUR.
For fun things to see and do you should budget around 10-20 EUR per day (around 15-30 USD). Less if most tickets to museums are included. Your biggest cost will probably be the public transport pass (IsarCard) for Munich. Depending upon the amount of rings you might have to spend between 80 and 300 EUR for the time you are there.

If you are with a host family I expect that you will be able to get your morning coffee and maybe news from CNN for free. They might also let you use the internet to email your mom&dad. It will depend upon your family. |

Boy, are you in for a culture shock!
Get use to either drinking coffee on the strong side or not at all. Cheaper if you brought your own and tastes better too.
Phone calls are about 1.10 per minute. better to use internet webcam, it is free.
cell phone, pay as you talk cards are a better method then you avoid roaming charges.
No club charges, no cocktails or slushy drinks...either. Get use to wine or beer.
If your driving... you would only drink water. If your caught, you will be hit with a huge fine, plus loose your licence and veh.
Everything is in Euro, in Germany. US cash wont work here!
Enjoy your trip... and dont be camera shy!
Good luck! |
