Well, in Germany, the legal age is 18 years...but, even when you're under 18, it's no problem to stay over here, I think....

What you cannot do is to drive a car under 18 years in Germany.

@maxie: you're a dumb idiot - I have definately not bombed you nor your shop! The war is over for almost 50 years - finally, get over about that stuff!

Torsten....every word you said here is right.

There is no minimun age to be in Germany as long as u have $$ to stay in a hotel/hostel.Why shud there be a minimun age?But if u can get into Germany already, u must be at a legal age to travel on ur own so i guess that wudnt be a prob to stay in Germany for a week.

In all hostels and hotels, I have found it to be 18. However, some places might let younger people stay with adults as long as they provide signed consent letters from parents, along with their contact information. But this is rare - it all depends on the price and location of the accomodation.

It is no problem to travel on your own in Germany as long as you bring a letter of consent from your parents with you.

Legally you cannot book hostels/hotels or buy train tickets if you are under 18 unless your legal guardian give their (silent) consent. (German civil code of law - BGB §§ 106-109.) Thus the letter. Hostels or hotels might also want to contact your parents by phone for additional confirmation. Tip: only give your age if asked for it. Casually trying to pass for 18 will save you hassle.

I recommend that you stay at hostels, since they are cheap and used to younger guests. The official IYHA-HI hostels are best, as independent hostels might have a minimum age requirement.

See http://www.hihostels.com

You will also need either a passport or (if you are an EU-citizen) a national ID card to enter Germany.

You also cannot party the night away if you are under 18. Nightclubs are taboo for you and you need to go back to the hostel at midnight. Drinking age is 16 for beer and wine, 18 for vodka and other hard stuff.

I thought that this would be an easy question to answer but it was not. However contact the German Consulate in your country for travel information's they can be really helpful.

18 is the rule, unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. There are exceptions for exchange students and students but you have other requirement to meet, such as a place of residence, and health insurance.

Contact the German Consulate for more information. You would not want to spend a week at the customs holding facility at the airport.

You should be of legal age (18) otherwise they might suspect you're a runaway child (happened to a friend of mine). If you aren't 18 yet, you should have proof of your parents consent
(by travelling in a school or church group or whatever) or have their telephone number ready - police might be tempted to call them.Plus, have the adress where you'll staying with you - they might check there too.
