Mr. Speaker |
How to say it in German? |
I need to make a call to Germany and have no idea if a person who'd answer the phone speaks English. So, how do I say:
My name is.... I am calling from US... do you speak English? Does anybody at your office speak English?
Many thanks for help/Danke schen Additional Details Actually, MG, no - the company I am about to call is a very small real estate firm in a small provincial town in East Germany. And I am calling them because my US customer needs to sell a property there and I am happy to go an extra mile for him. |

I would start off with saying..
Hallo ich bin (Your Name) von USA, sprechen sie english? Macht irgendjemanden an Ihrem Büro sprechen English?
Hallo Ich bin - is Hello I am your name from USA, do you speak English? Does anyone at your office speak German?
I will double check with two of my Native friends for Grammar or any errors in this. I am usually very close but always return to correct it once I speak to them.
Hope that helps |

I'm quite sure they speak english there because most people in Germany do.
My name is.....Mein Name ist
I am calling from US.....Ich rufe aus den USA an.
Du you speak English?....Sprechen Sie Englisch?
Does anybody at your office speak English.....Spricht irgendjemand in ihrem Büro Englisch?
[You don't use ü in english but you can pronounce it like an u, they will understand that.]
"Danke" means thank you. |

ich rufe aus den USA an. Ich spreche kein Deutsch. können sie mich bitte mit einem Kollegen , der Englisch spricht, verbinden? danke |

(Do you understand me?
I'm calling from America.
Can you call someone who speaks English?)
I know, I know... German is almost as difficult as French.
Almost.

I guess you are about to call a company that has some sort of international connections, otherwise you wouldn´t be calling them from the US, right? ;)
So no worries, everybody will be able to perfectly understand you. Plus, you are very free to simply play stupid and say "This is XY, I am calling from the US and would like to ...." - if the person doesn´t speak English, they will recognize the language and immediately interrupt you to connect you to a colleague.
Absolutely no worries. :) |
