How to transition to Life in Germany for 3 months? |
Hello! I am 31, married female, and will be helping a family out with child care while I work a bit in my profession, which is singing classically. My husband will be staying in the states while I'm abroad. I was wondering if anyone has some suggestions for me - how to make friends of a similar age, how to meet people in general, the best way to meet people when your German is only that of a beginner/advanced beginner? I am shy by nature but want to practice my German. I will be staying in Kassel, which is between Frankfurt and Hamburg. I will be off in the evenings and weekends - will be taking the train. I will be there from mid January through mid April, so not the most ideal time to do outdoor activities. My budget will be tight.
I would really appreciate your ideas. Thank you! |

I think your attitude is alright, and that's what will be appreciated in Germany. And I really do think that you're more than an "advanced beginner" in German. I think you really do speak German on a very advanced level, if you'd try.
Thing is, I'm living in the southeast of Germany, so that's nowhere near your place. Otherwise, I'd have said let's have a beer and a pizza, and some talk together. But I'm sure you'll make friends with people, and don't worry about your budget. I travelled some countries (like France, on a student exchange) with maybe less money than you have. |

For train travel buy the Schöneswochenende ticket. It costs around 30E and you can travel anywhere within Germany for 1 day and tag five people along. If you meet 4 other friends you can split the cost of a ticket.
I am 32 and have lived for 3 years in Berlin. I learnt German by taking an intensive course and speak it at conversation level. Just speak as much as you can and if someone answers you in English reply in German. Don't give up!
Here are some free online German courses for you:

First of all, you do not necessarily need to learn German - Most Germans speak basic English, if not very well English. It helps, and would be fun to take a language course where you could ultimately meet other English speakers! But I do see that you'd like to improve, so I would then suggest the Volkshochschule. They're not too expensive (I got half off for being an aupair, which they didn't even verify!) and are a wonderful, well known language school.
There is also a website for English speakers in Germany called www.toytowngermany.com. There you can find forums to speak with English speakers in Germany, along with local meet ups for English speakers. Check it out!
It's actually very, very cheap to travel throughout Europe. Ryanair.com offers 10-20 Euro flights, sometimes free, for random countries throughout Europe. Bahn.de also offers very cheap train tickets throughout Germany and its neighbor countries. I'm moving back to Hannover on March 2nd and I'm a 22 year old female. Maybe we can meet up if you'd like! Either way, good luck and have fun! :) |

Well, of course you will need to practice your German as much as possible and look up conversational phrases. You will also need to find some kind of touristy map guide so you can see some of the best places in your area.
I hope you have fun! |
