I agree with the previous responder. If you just say football to someone in the US who doesn't know about our unique game, they'll think soccer, as everywhere else football /is/ soccer.

The literal translation, "Fußball", means "soccer" in German (sort of our national sport). "football" means football, but to make sure you're talking about American football, add "amerikanisch". Because the Brits, y'know, reclaim the word "football" for soccer, and so do we; so if you just talk about football, there might be a misunderstanding.
