Hi Breezer,
You need a special education for being a Kindergarten teacher (Erzieherin) in Germany as the first answerer said already.
Maybe just walk walk by your local Kindergarten and ask those ladies. maybe you could "help" out in other ways first like teaching German Kindergarten Kids English. I know that some Kindergarten do teach English (songs, simple words, numbers)

With a three-year apprenticeship to become a nursery nurse.

In Baden-Württemberg it takes 4 years:
first year Vorpraktikum (pre internship)
2 years school
last and 4. year Anerkennungsjahr (induction year).
But think in Bavaria it takes 5 years!
You need this qualification to get a job as a 'Erzieher'
but perhaps you could work as an assistant eg in a German-English Kindergarten...many parents would be glad if there's some one in the Kindergarten who sings and speaks English with the kids.

Yes you need to do an apprenticeship. This involves going to some kind of college and working/learning in a Kindergarten.
Best way to get information is to go to your neares Agentur für Arbeit (formerly Arbeitsamt). They help you with everything job-related.
A problem though would be a work permit. As a foreigner you cannot just start working here without getting the permit first.

To be honest, I think you're probably too old already for an apprenticeship because you can only start one till you're 25, the only way might be a "Umschulung", or you could get a qualification as a "Tagesmutter" but no clue how to do that.
