I'm planning on moving to Berlin on my own for a year what do I need to know?

I am a 20 year old student from London (will be 21 or 22 when I move). What kind of visa do I need? How can I find a nice cheap flat? I've been trying to find flats online but haven't found anything. I've mainly been looking in Kreuzberg, but I'm not fussy. Also, I'd like to have a job lined up for when I move, what kind of work can I expect?

You will need to go to the Einwohnersamt (I think that is what it is called) and register when you find a flat.

Kreuzberg is a great area, but you may not find too many "cheap" flats there. Try Prenzlauerberg, too. However, I have to admit, rents in Berlin are really reasonable. Be advised, that MOST apartments are going to require that you pay 3 months in advance. AND they require a 3 month notice before moveout. Since you only plan on staying 1 year, you may want to look into renting a room or even subleasing. I would check papers from Berlin instead of online.

As for a job, why don't you look into teaching English as a second language. There are many private language schools that are looking for native speakers - Berlitz, Inlingua, Linguarama.

First of all study german. Secondly come just for few days to find a flat. Don't except for high salary because the situation is very bad everything is going up and it is hard to get a decent job. But you can try everything worth give a try but you need to know german.
www.berlin.de will give you more advice.

If you're British, you don't need any special visa to come and live in Berlin.

Although I can answer the rest of your questions, I recommend that you'll ask them at

where more than only one person could answer your question.

You don't need a visa because it's the EU. The best websites for finding flats in Berlin are http://www.immobilienscout24.de/ and http://www.wg-gesucht.de/ . On the latter site you can find bedsitters and flat-sharing communities.

Another website for (cheap) rooms in a flat sharing community is: http://www.studenten-wg.de
A flat sharing community is probably the best, because you will already be in contact with some other students.
Be prepared to learn German (start a soon as possible), life will be much easier in Germany when knowing German ;-) - especially when you want to find a good job.
