The Chimp gave you some brilliant answer already however I would like to add if you are into hiking there are not just the Bayerische Alpen with cities like Garmisch being one of my favorites too...
There is also the 'National Park Bayerischer Wald'
on the border to Czech Republic

There really are *so* many. A lot of them will depend on how you plan to do this - public transport or car. A large degree of what comes recommended is also down to your ability and fitness level.

We live in Munich and started hiking in the Alps last year - we prefer information in English but there is not a lot of detailed trail information, but a wealth in German.

If you read German, go to the DAV site (Deutsche Alpen Verein - German Alps Association http://www.alpenverein.de/ their info is spot on and have excellent suggestions for the time of year you choose and ranked by physical ability.

If you are looking for a light walk in the mountains, you could do a search on the local English site - there are organized walks http://gea-muc.de/ if you happen to catch one - or http://www.toytowngermany.com/forum/ but the descriptions are weak.

Personally, I recommend hiking around the lakes (there are many) Ammersee for instance is a short train trip away from the city - if you start early you could be there and back all within a day. Another option, Tegernsee. If you are traveling by car your options are much more open, of course.

Garmisch is very picturesque and hiking trails are all over the mountains there. I suppose that might be the national park you are looking for. Currently there is still snow on the peaks of higher mountains. Remember to be safe.

The mountains down here are really beautiful.

One of my most favourite places in the world is the Hohenschwangau area, where King Ludwig's castle of Neuschwanstein is. Not only is the castle one of the most amazing sights in the world, but the whole area is full of lakes and alpine walks. You can walk from the castle to the top of the Tegelberg for a magnificent view over the Alps, then get a cable car back down. I'm sure you wont be disappointed with that area.
