Berlin in October is glorious - not too hot, not yet too cold. The middle of the month you will have the festival of lights, when they light up the buildings and all - note that when I was there in October of 2005, the leaves were still on the trees for it! There is a big festival in the platz across from the Dom and entertainment and everything.

Do take layers - temps vary a lot through October, there will be cold nights, and also warm days. Go up in the Dome of the Reichstag during the day so you can see the colors of the Tiergarten.

Take Bus 100/200 from Bahnhof Zoo to Alexanderplatz to see all the sights for only a Euro.

You might consider a weekly or monthly ticket on the public transport. If you do this, get only the A and B sections. You will still be able to go to C sections if you want to go to Potsdam, Wannsee or Oranienburg (for Sachsenhausen) with a small additional fee, and you can get tickets for the fee from the machine. But won't be as much as adding that to your ticket. If you are there for a shorter time consider a Berlin WelcomeCard.

Consider staying in the East part of Germnay - I like the east center better than the West, personally. But get to both.

Eat currywurst and doner kebap, or if you are vegetarian, falafel.

Visit neighborhoods like Prenzenlauerberg or Kreuzberg.

Get to the museum of your choice. Don't miss things like Checkpoint Charlie, the Brandenburg Gate, the Holocaust Memorial, the Reichstag.

Visit the Topographie of Terrors exhibit.

I have about a thousand more suggestions- Berlin is one of my favorite cities.

Bring change. The bathrooms are NOT free. When at a restaurant they prefer you pay EXACT.

Pack layers. Take a scarf and a hat and an umbrella. Be prepared for gray, cool weather, however it can also be beautiful.
Dress warmly enough that you can also sit outside at cafes and enjoy Berlin.
