Dr. Christopher Carter

I'm traveling to Germany next year, advice?

The plan is me and my friend will be leaving for Germany from Los Angeles on Jun 8,of next year. We're Seniors in High School (we'll have graduated obviously). We plan to do something like maybe backpack for a while, and get jobs while we're there. We plan to stay from Jun 8,to Sept 7. Any advice, pros, cons? Its sort of like a vacation/experience before we start college.

Assuming that you will be flying into one of the bigger cities like Munich or Frankfurt bring enough money for a start (I-m not kidding, Europe and especially Germany is quite expensive)

Finding a job might be difficult. Speaking German is definitely a plus (and a requirement). But you might be more successful in the bigger cities, working in a cafe or bar or maybe a hostel. Don-t know if http://www.craigslist.org is already popular home but you can try to find something there.

Getting around in the country is quite affordable on the weekend by train (http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/prices/germany/swt.shtml) Not the fastest trains you can use but you get pretty much anywhere.

I think you-re allowed to stay up to 3 months in Germany (or any other european country) but I-m not sure if you-re legally allowed to work during that time (http://germany.usembassy.gov/acs/about_germany.html
or
http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1123.html)

Since we have a long history and lots of interesting places it-s hard to make any recommendations. That mostly depends on what you-re interested in. In this case, google is your friend... oops, yahoo is your friend.

Have fun and enjoy the trip. And no need to be afraid of Germans. We-re nice people and we can smile from time to time ;)

You're welcome. Spend your money over here but I'm rather sure you won't get a job.

Reasons:
you don't speak German
you need working skills
you need experience
and most of all - you need a work permit. Without any it's illegal that you work here.

Even skilled Germans have problems to get a job. Why do you think American boys just of out school will be luckier?
Sorry, boys, that's fact.

Sounds great! Try to plan everything out though. There are some amazing deals on train tickets, ( www.bahn.de ) but you need to have maps and quite a bit of cash on your hands.
Where are you going to stay? Where exaclty do you want to go? Do you know German? Cause without speaking the language, I don't think it will be likely that someone will hire you. Jobs are short in Germany and if they know you are leaving in a couple of months, I don't think anybody would want you to be honest. Backpacking sounds nice, but remember, that it can get quite wet even during the summer months.
Have fun!

its an amazing country you will have a great time. make sure you know the language and history of germany immigration is very strict there and usually wont let you live there if u don't speak german unless on a german visa for schooling, anyway the pubs and bars are lots of fun and u will be able to drink germany is full of good looking girls so that's a plus! the people there are sarcastic and some r loud so the culture is different... also u will prob. see prostitutes speacily in munich so don't stare that is completely disrespectful and they will FLIP out on u lolz personal experience:) don't worry about much have fun and enjoy urself this will be an amazing experience and just enjoy the ride that goes with it germans are soooo uber nice so u should have a good time.
