I am a 14 year old boy traveling to Germany. Is it customary for boys to wear speedos while swimming?

Billabong and Quicksilver-style board shorts are much more popular in Europe currently. Wear a speedo under those.

Speedo if you want to do competitive swimming. If you're just in it for the fun, shorts are a better choice - less revealing.

well right now i am a 15 year old girl living in Germany and i go to the pool alot. when you go to the pool do not be suprised if you see really old fat guys in speedos, and see naked people walking around(in some pools that is exceptable). you can wear a speedo but not all of the boys do German or not German. some Germans are used to the Americans speaking english and most of them know it because they have to learn it in school at the age of ten. well i hope that you have a good trip, and good luck deciding what you will wear.

Germans are CRAZY for the "California beach" style right now, so go with mid- to high-range brands of board shorts and you will be the envy of all (because all clothing in that style is VERY expensive there right now). Speedos are acceptable, but not fashionable.

Also, it really depends on where you go swimming if should should wear anything at all. Many beaches are clothing optional, and I think it is legal for people underage to be nude as well (not really sure, I was legal when I was there so it wasn't an issue and I wasn't looking to see if there were any naked kids around) but you should ask someone before doing this. Rule of thumb: If you don't feel comfortable being nude, go ahead and wear whatever you want. If you feel like being nude and find out that it is legal, always check the beach before you take off your clothes. Some are permanently no nudity and some are designated clothing optional. A lot of beaches though don't have set rules, and the etiquette is that whoever shows up at the beach first in the day gets to decide if it's clothing optional or not.

Most teenage boys here wear those long shorts-type bathing trunks. The little Speedos look a little bit gay on anyone except professional swimmers. And like someone here already said, you also see fat, old hairy guys wearing Speedos, too. Germany has some really nice outdoor pools. Hope you have fun while you're here.

I used to go to the pool a lot in Germany. For the boys, it generally doesn't matter. Speedo's are acceptable, or w/e else. It doesn't matter. The Germans are nice and will pretty much wear whatever and wont criticize or point and stare.

Yes, it is typical for Germans to wear Speedo style swimsuits, but that is not the current fashion amoung your age group. Just go with your normal American board short style swim trunks. You won't stick out as a foreigner, and you'll probably be more comfortable anyhow.

I live in a tiny German town. Most of the kids at our local pool wear board shorts; a few wear speedos.

i am a native German and to answer you question yes.
we like to kind joke about the tourists with there biggie swim trunks. if you want to fit in more i would were a speedo.
so if you arnt in shape you better start working out !

hey kid.if its ok for a 400 lb kraut to wear a speedo its got to be all right for you to wear a speedo.besides the bastards hate us any way.so whatever you do will piss them off.just keep telling them how we won ww2.and if it wasnt for the usa they would all be russians.
