You should learn:

how to ask for directions (where is the . . .)
Left
Right
Numbers through 20
Foods & Drinks that are important to you (water, beer, wine)
please
thank you
you're welcome
hello
sorry/excuse me
good morning/afternoon/night
some general travel words (stop, track, bus, plane, airport)

Many Germans, especially in larger areas, speak excellent English. A smile and an attempt at a few words and most will happily start to speak English. Have a great time! : )

I would suggest some greetings on the time you arrive, like say in the morning or when you say good night to somebody:
Gud Morgen= Good Morning
Gud Nacht =Good Night
......Hope this helps :D

Here is a link to an online English-Germany dictionary in case you need to look up stuff. I would also suggest you buy a phrase book to learn the usual little greetings and questions... Viel Spass in Deutschland!

It would be good to speak a few words of German to be polite, but many people there speak English, so you won't have to learn a lot. Just please, thank you, hello, that sort of thing. Buy a German phrasebook to take with you.
My daughter (native English speaker) lives in Germany and has learned to speak the language fluently in less than 12 months. All the best for your exchange.
Tschuss! (Goodbye!)

For the very basics, this is a great page:

(Also see links on the left for more)

Enjoy the exchange! =)
