Do the homework - very important. Learn about 10 key verbs to start. Most important verbs; haben - to have, sein - to be.
Listen to CDs. Watch German movies, movies give you a feel for the language. Best advise, spend some time in Germany, you will learn more German than you will ever learn in class. However, class is important for the basics.

You are in the beginning --- perhaps in some years --- look at Heinrich von Kleist --- Michael Koolhaas. What a grammar, what a language. Sorry today we have not such a language --- we are too stupid.

That's good you learn another language. German is not so easy, but everybody can learn this language. Good Luck.

"ie" is always pronounced like "ee".
German is an awsome language.
Nouns always get capitals.
Learn the gender of stuff if you can 'cause it helps you out.
DK what else, just enjoy it.

Oh, plus, read this poem, it's the reason I learned German:

And this is the song that it was later made into by Schubert:
