For a day trip you'll most probably arrive at Hauptbahnhof http://www.inside-munich.com/train-to-munich.html
From there you can take a stroll through the old part of the city and the pedestrian zone with Stachus, Marienplatz, Viktualienmarkt.
Then I'd go and walk through the English garden http://www.inside-munich.com/english-garden.html and relax there in one of the beer gardens, maybe at Chinesischer Turm.
After a small refreshing brake you can visit the Residenz (great castle-like royal residence) or take the tram to Castle Nymphenburg and the Botanical garden.
When the weather is bad, you can also visit one of the many museums.http://www.inside-munich.com/munich-museum.html

If you like Museums, the Deutsches Museum covers a variety of interests. I remember the last time I was there is '95 or '96 they even had a BMV hydro car outside. It was to show that they were trying to develope alternatives to gasoline run cars.
Other than that, the whole places is full of shops. If you go to the Zentrum you might find a "info" center there in which you could ask for "sehenwerdichkeit." I would think that if not then the Bahnhof would have an "info" for touristic information.
