the train from the airport to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof (central station) takes around 35 minutes and around this area you can easily spend some hours strolling and shopping.

to look for the schedule check out at the german railways (Deutsche Bundesbahn) site in english

We are talking Frankfurt Airport (not Frankfurt Hahn or Frankfurt Main station) right?

If it is transit between :
* 2 international flights -> not enought time (q's)

* internation -> regional -> mabye, but very close you won't see much

* regional -> regional -> would work, you could use the S-Bahn and go to Taunusanlage see the "alte Oper" and walk down the Zeil (shoping mall) to Konstabler wache and use the S-Bahn to go back to the airport.

* regional -> International -> nogo...would not risk that as Q's and security can take a lot of time.

Also you may want tell us WHEN you're there (what time, What Day of the week) as the shops in the city are only open 6 days a week (So is closed) and from 10:00 to around 20:00

Yes you can go to the city. Go to the regional train station in the airport and take a train (S-Bahn) to Frankfurt HBF. It takes around 15 mins only. Tickets are available from machines. From Hauptbahnhof you can walk through the center or take a subway. A central point is for example the stop Dom/Römer just 2 stops from HBF. Take a look at the map http://www.rmv.de/coremedia/generator/Bilder/0Abbildungen/PlaeneNetzplaene/PLA__Schnellbahnplan2008_3Dgr,property=image.gif

You have a five hour lay over? As long as you are sure your luggage has been properly transfered than sure you could go into the city for awhile. There are a few ways. You can take the train directly into the city from the airport now. You could rent a car or take a Taxi.

The train station is http://www.bahn.de and you can use English and you want the Frankfurt Airport not the Main station as your starting point and return point.

IF you leave though you will have to go through security again before they let you back in!!

Have fun...Viel Spass!

Take the S-Bahn to the station called "Hauptwache." It only takes about 15 minutes - this is the middle of the pedestrian zone. If you ar coming when the weather is warmer you might want to go down to the river near the bridge they call the "Eiserner Steg" and take a one-hour boat tour around and have a beer or two. This is a good way to kill a few hours.

THE CITY IS 12 KILOMETRES AWAY , ITS A MODERN CITY , REBUILT AFTER THE LAST WAR , NOT A CITY YOU WOULD FIND AS A TOURIST TRAP
