Very American those!

Not unstylish, but not something a teen would wear. Maybe a woman in her late 20's to 40's combined with a long flowing hippie-style skirt and a tight-fitting women's t-shirt.

Teens and twens are more likely to wear flip-flops or real sandals.

The fashion here is pretty crap. I live in Bavaria and when we moved here my wife actually welled up with tears at the sight of what people were wearing! (She's a fashion designer)
You can pretty much wear Crocs with Speedo's and no one would care!

In Berlin you could walk around naked and no one would notice. I really don't think anyone cares unless you wear those huge floppy clown shoes and start making balloon toys for kids.
Everyone dresses sloppily in Berlin, and as for the rest of Germany, most people wear either those canvas shoes or some kind of sandals.
If you want to really get noticed in a fashion sense go to Poland, Russia or some other part of E. Europe. The women tend to notice a lot more.

The 3rd link doesn't look to be ugly. It depends, where you want to wear 'em :)

For a pub or night club it would be ok. (btw: don't call Night Clubs in Germany in other way than Disco, because Germans understand under "Night Club" something completely different)

Take a look at what German Chancellor Angela Merkel was wearing at the recent G-20 and NATO summits in London and Strasbourg, respectively. Then take a look at what Michelle Obama wore.
I wouldn't worry about being an unfashionable American in Germany!
Granted, both these women are a bit older than what I imagine you are, and are dressing perhaps a bit (a bit!?!) more conservatively because of their positions (and the nature of the events). That said, however, if you have an iota of fashion sense, you should do just fine.
Maybe the stares you got were out of envy? (Or curiosity as to where could you have found such neat stuff?)
Don't assume they were negative!
