Try GLS. They have got a very good reputation and are located in a hip neighborhood. They will be more expensive than the VHS, though...

There is so many language schools: Berlitz, Inlingua, Volkshochschule (VHS). They all having program for the beginners, cheep is the VHS. Also get a dictionary, watch German TV, read Newspapers better magazines, get contact with people and this is the way how you learn very fast this language. Good luck and have fun in Berlin such a nice place. |

Depends, how you learn best. Going to a class, doesn't do anything, unless you are prepared to do your homework. Some people learn with tapes or DVD's or picture books. The way I learn a new language is, I take a juicy book, and start reading, with a dictionary beside me. The first page takes usuallly a week, the second page two days and the third a day. From then on it goes really fast. Support your new found knowledge out on the streets, in pubs, taking to people, ask for direction, the time, the best place to eat. Be nice about it. Take a sticker block and stick the name of each item in your place in German on it. First the mirror - Spiegel and so on. |

I like all of the ideas above...I have used tapes in my car, books (start with simple children's books), CD's, (Pimslar)
German Television (start with soap operas---the plots are all the same, evening news is the hardest because they change the topic every 2 minutes), fashion and popular magazines are interesting and have pictures to go with the story, friends that speak German are good, and best of all being actually in Germany is a great way to learn, you will pick up stuff fast.
The worst for me was gong to school and taking boring grammar classes...I just wanted to learn how to do everyday stuff, wasn't looking to write the next great German novel...Keep it fun and interesting and it is much easier that way..I have learned to love it.. |

I've been to Volkshochschule (VHS) and Goethe Institut... I've heard about Berlitz but it's pretty expensive...
I'd go for Volkshochschule because I had a great experience while I was studying in Hannover, Germany and it's not expensive... 125 euro per course (4 months) twice a week (3 hours a day) |
