When I arrived in Germany. I used to once a week avoid where the military hang outs and ventured into German pub. You have to work on your german, that is a given. So, I guess, you are with the military so I presume you will get a two week headstart course. You can always go to the german-american meeting, but you constantly fall back on english conversation. I eventually got involved in Fasching in a German club and from there I met a lot of Germans.

I knew one soldier who was a russian linguist who worked part time at a German McDonalds. He left Germany speaking German. Maybe on your days off from the military, try working on a hobby where you can meet Germans. If you go to the Volkhochschule to learn German, you will meet other foreigners. If you take a course other than german that you are interested in, you will meet Germans.

Join a German bowling club (kegeln)
Join a German sports club (judo, basketball, soccer, etc)
Join a small arms shooting club

Clubs are usually called "vereins" and not meaning a disco club.

just be yourself, natural, the way you really are. some time given and bingo you achieved your first goal. best places to meet people are pubs, clubs or sports-clubs or other interresting subjects. go for something you like yourself and take it as from there. best of luck ! it worked for in the UK.

hey, just go out in the city on the weekend, maybe in a restaurant, disco, biergarten or something! germans love to drink and just talk in a pub so i guess thats best! when they notice that you´re a foreigner they will be very interested about you! good luck, greetings from frankfurt!

You go in a small pub. Or you go to Volkshochschule and learn german or Suaheli.
