LL Bean and Land's End have websites. They sell well made coats and jackets. Sporting goods stores might be able to help too. 55 degrees-- warm for midwesterners. Frigid for ppl in southern Calif. haha. But a jacket is a good idea.

It's a weird month in Germany--- you can freeze or boil depending on the day...I use a goose down jacket with A TON of pockets large and small for cameras, snacks, kleenex, coupn books, things I buy during the day, bus route maps, guide books, etc...I would try on line--like LLBean...a photographer's type jacket, or a fly fisherman's has lots of pockets and might work...

I live in Cali too and I just got back from Germany. I was there through December and yeah, it was pretty cold compared to San Diego. I just brought my snowboarding jacket for my outdoor activities but ended up buying a really great wool coat while there for a more formal dress. I say bring a bunch of sweaters and take whatever coat you have. If you still need a warmer one, buy one there! I found the German coats to be of very high quality, looked great, and I found a really great deal! It also makes a great souvenir that you will appreciate for years to come! By the way...bring warm pajamas...but I don't think it should be too cold in April...I'll be there too so I hope its not...
