Check out the websites of Etap Hotel or Ibis, these are chain hotels that aren't too expensive. The two Etap Hotels in Dortmund are on the outskkirts, though, so it would depend on what you plan to do during your stay and whether you'll be getting around by car or public transport.

If you're comfortable with hostel-type accommodation, you may want to try this hostel. It was opened about a year ago and I've heard it's good value for money.

It's in the Kreuzviertel district, which is a beautiful part of Dortmund with old houses and many small cafés and shops.

You should look into hostels. You could look at a website called: www.hostelz.com

oftentimes has pretty good prices so it might be worth to check that out.
Have fun!
