Come over here and enjoy. You will be astounded in how LITTLE our life differs from the life in the US, but there are details you'll have to find out on your own, or your friends will tell you. And I'm sure you'll make friends very quickly.
And learn the language! It pays. Learn a little while you're at home, and learn the rest here. |

Teenagers are pretty much copy and paste wherever you go. Here, they listen to techno or rock, like football, handball and drink beer. |

In Germany, you can not get your drivers license until you are 18 so alot of teenagers take the bus, tram, bike or walk.
Expect to see alot of old buildings. Visit these links to get an idea of what to expect... http://www.msigi.net/photo-germany-south.shtml OR http://www.euratlas.com/Atlas/germany_rhine/index.html OR http://www.flickr.com/photos/14279744@N03/sets/72157604348671758/
The weather in the summer is like the weather is in the midwest states in America. Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois. Temps between 75-90 degrees cooling off slightly at night. Bring summer clothes, shorts, tanks, tees, maybe a pair of jeans and sweatshirt if it gets cool.
As like any country and any city, teenagers have their own preference in music and style. When I turn on MTV Germany, I hear alot of what is listened to in the US. Rock, R & B, hip hop and also some techno or house music. Radio stations play a very wide variety of music. Anything from Phil Collins to Eminem. Personally, I think the radio stations suck. (Bring an iPod or something!) As far as how Ive seen teenagers dress. The 80's are back! Bright colors, skinny jeans, accessories. Alot of guys have mullet hair styles. Alot of girls have their hair dyed shades of red or black and some have one or two highlights in blue purple green or something like that.
Teenagers do the same things here that they do anywhere. Go to movies and hang out with friends. One difference is that the legal age to drink beer is 16 and to drink liquor its 18. At 16 you are allowed into the clubs until midnight (I think its midnight).
In southern germany, the dialect they speak with is different from that of "proper" german. I took german in high school for 2 1/2 years and it is entirely different from how they speak where I live. I live near Freiburg Germany. (way down south bordering France and Switzerland)
I hope that gives you an idea of what to expect when you get here. But know what I just said, I would just suggest you to be yourself. Dress how you normally dress and just be who you are. No matter how hard you try to fit in and speak the language, you will have an American accent (assuming you are American) and people will know you arent German. They will really respect you for trying to speak their language and being yourself.
Have a great time on your vacation! |

In the south it's a bit conservative and the pupils have to learn a lot.
The econmical situation is (much) better than in the north and east, the fashion might be different, but teenage boys and girls will be similar to the US. |

Fashion: retro. vintage. just a few words to describe. for boys and girls. Many dress preppy. many dress just a tshirt and jeans.
Teenage life: same as here pretty much (school, family, friends) going to movies, mall, playing sports(soccer, swimming) etc. They dress up nice for everything. no one goes somewhere in sweatpants and an old t-shirt
daily life/values: have a large breakfast quick lunch and medium dinner. All family sits down at table. Germans get insulted when u don't eat their food(hint-hint.)
Nowadays many germans enjoy going shopping and eating at small cafes.
Germans are pretty much laid back people. They are also very friendly :)
In germany u can visit many museums and many old landmarks.
Have fun! also im going back to germany again this summer |
