Mainz, Wiesbaden, Darmstadt,Hanau and many more. 30km circle with good connections. I have left a link to a german hotel search platform with a 30km circle around Frankfurt/Buchmesse. You find it easy, the site got symbols for train/taxi/subway/bus distance to the Book fair.

Darmstadt is near by. about a 20 minute walk from the train are two good priced motels. About 10 minutes from there near a big tower statue you can find stores and good food. |

Wiesbaden, Mainz, Darmstadt and Hanau are all fairly close by, and public transport is excellent so you won't have any problems getting to the Messe.
The book fair is one of the biggest trade fairs in Germany, so prices will be high. I don't know what your definition of affordable is, but expect to pay around 150 Euro per night.
Try the Accor website as they have a range of cheaper hotels (like the Ibis, F1 and Mercure). Or go to www.lastminute.com and type in Frankfurt, or one of the towns I've listed above. If you see one that looks suitable, don't book it. Go to the hotel's own website and see if you can get a cheaper trade fair deal, as special offers may not be listed on lastminute. |
