Do you already know German or not? If not, contact the Goethe-Institut in Cairo and the German embassy. The embassy should know where you can take classes which prepare you for the necessary exams. Studying German in Egypt is a lot cheaper than in Germany - take advantage of that and get to know the basics before you go. (The German university in Cairo also is an option worth looking into. Don't know whether they have any language courses though.)

I also hope that you are already familar with http://www.daad.de - all the info you need.

Most universities in Germany also have very good programs that prepare you for TestDaF and other exams - the exams you need to pass in order to enroll as a student. The German embassy, the DAAD or the Akademisches Auslandsamt of the university you are interested in should have more information - on visa, finances, etc.

Feel free to email me for more advice.

I would also ask the university you will be applying to for your Ph. D. about their foreign language program. Most universities offer such programs and that way you could be sure the exam will be accepted. Sometimes exams from universities and language schools from other German Federal countries are not instantly excepted due to lower or higher requirements that have to be fulfilled.

I learned German at, and was very successful with the Goethe Institut. They have immersion, intensive classes, where you can get through a semseter of work in 4 weeks. In addition they are reasonably priced, provide dormitory or homestays depending on your desire for a very small amount, and have a wonderful and complete cultural program.

When I studied there, in 2005, there were many students working on their German in order to study in Germany. Indeed that was the majority reason. I cannot recommend them enough, my experience with them was great!

Hi,

Another option would be to try Berlitz - they also have German teachers here and it is a good method for learning!

Good luck

Yep, there are dozens of programs...but you sound serious--so intensive Goethe Institute classes may be what you need...A Japanese friend, there on business, came out of class crying one day because he didn't think he could make it and he would "dishonor" his family if he didn't...Are you serious ???

I agree, the Goetheinstitut is your best bet. And you can improve your chances of learning quick by finding a homestay with a German family. I know Experiment e.V. arranges these, so maybe you should contact them.
