Train connections and fares can be found under :

http://www.bahn.de/p/view/international/englisch/international_guests.shtml

Travel time by train is something between 5:30hrs and 6hrs.

Flights between Munich and Hamburg are offered by
Lufthansa
http://www.lufthansa.com/online/portal/lh/de/homepage?tl=1&l=en
AirBerlin
http://www.airberlin.com/site/index.php?page=start.php&LANG=eng&all=1
Germanwings

Have a nice day

You have already some AIR and TRAIN links here above. My advice ( = personal preference only yhough..): if the train journey is longer than 3-4 hours I always fly

I agree, traveling Munich - Hamburg you should take the plane. Taking the ICE train takes you at least 5 - 6 hours and will cost you about € 120,-. That is going direct. If you take the cheaper version you might be traveling up to 11 hours having to switch trains a few times. It does have a certain romantic touch to travel Germany by train but I would advice a shorter distance if you do.

If money is not an issue - fly or take the sleeper train.

Airlines that fly this route are Lufthansa, Air Berlin or Germanwings with togeher about 20 connections per day.

http://www.skyscanner.net and http://www.opodo.de are good search engines.

The direct night train leaves at 22:54 and arrives at 07:53. The regular price is 114 EUR, but if you book in advance over the internet, are flexible and travel two weekdays, you should be able to get a SparNight offer for 29 EUR (seat) or 39 EUR (l-down couchette) or 59 EUR (bed). Just check at www.bahn.de. There is also another night train that requires a change in Frankfurt at 11 pm and gets you to Hamburg at 7 am, the places there seem to be easier to get, but it is seats only.

Apart from the special price for the night train there is Schoene-Wochenende-Ticket. It is 33 EUR if you buy it at the vending machine or over the internet and valid for up to 5 people travelling together or for a family with as many of their own kids as they have. With this ticket you can travel an unlimited distance on regional trains on a Saturday or Sunday. Go to www.bahn.de, enter your departure point, your destination, select "only local transport" and you'll get possible connections that get you from Munich to Hamburg on the cheap. They take around 12-13 hours with 3-5 changes.

So my recommendation is: Take the SparNight special offer for the NZ night train if you can get it.

If you can afford it at all, do take the plane. hamburg to Munich is almost the longest train distance you can travel in Germany, its from way up north to way down south. Plus, on such a long ride, you are bound to be delayed at some point. I'm a great advocate of rail travel, but frankly, once the ride is longer than four hours, I find it's much more convenient to fly.

ice train is cheaper and very fast

Both train and Flights are possible depends upon what is your choice
