Germany is now a democracy and they have elections and laws against discrimination. They are part of the G6 too and are a large trading partner of all Western nations.

Culturally, I think it can vary widely in terms of peoples' tolerance and openness. Of course, this is true of most places.

I have heard both positive and negative accounts of Germany and lived there myself for a few years. It is hard to generalize, but I'd say that most of the time it is fine, but that it isn't as progressive as the US or Canada or even the UK.
