I'm really curious to hear what folks in other countries grow in their home flower and veggie gardens. We live in the Midwest, in the States, and here's what we'll have:

Here's a selection of some nice cities not too far from Hamburg. For some details look at en.wikipedia.org or de.wikipedia.org (for some (more) photos).
Lübeck (45min away by train) - http://www.luebeck-tourism.de
Lüneburg (30min) - http://www.lueneburg.de
Bremen (60min) - http://www.bremen.de
Schwerin (60min) - http://www.schwerin.com/eng/index.php
Wismar (90min)
Ratzeburg (60min)
Glückstadt (30min) - http://www.glueckstadt-tourist-info.de
Stade (60min) - http://www.stade-tourismus.de
Helgoland (day trip): Island in the North Sea - connections e.g. by speed catamaran from Hamburg - http://www.helgoland.de/engl.htm
If you have to pick just one or two destinations (I could spend all 4 days in Hamburg without leaving the city) I'd recommend Lübeck and/or Schwerin.

I highly recommend Celle, the town is chock full of half-timbered houses along quaint little streets & alleyways. Bring plenty of film for this visit!
