I will be traveling from the USA to Munich, Germany in mid-April. What should I see and do? Surrounding area?

I will be spending from April 18-24, 2007, with no itinerary, and no expectations. I want to relax, visit with people, not interested in seeing any more Churches, castles, or Capital Buildings. I have actually booked a Hostel, for the first time, am concerned about how to protect my valuables and Passport. For a short trip like this, what is a reasonable distance to travel to see other sights via train or other public transportation? Would consider renting an auto to see surrounding area/countries. I only wish "Sistablu" knew about Munich, as much as she knows about Egypt!

Thank you, in advance.

Ricky

There is much to see and do in the Munich area. Sure, the Hofbrauhaus is a must if you like beer. There are many beer gardens in the area, as well. I would suggest Schloss Neuschwanstein (Newschwanstein Castle). This is the castle that Walt Disney used to model his story castles from. Also there is the Kukuksnest (?), the mountain hide-away of Hitler. Berchtesgarten is not far from Munich and has a lot of history. BMW has it's main manufacturing area in Munich and Audi has it's main manufacturing are in Ingolstadt (which is not far away). Austria and Switzerland are both very close to Munich, so don't be afraid to make a day trip to each country. Nurnberg is about 2 hours north and has much to see as well.

Germany is (by American standards) a small country. Everything is within driving distance. You could also hit the Czech Republic (Karlovy Vary ... aka Karlsbad is a GREAT place) or Poland (just about anywhere).

One word...Hofbrauhaus!!!!

You stay six days, thats not too long for visitin munich.
there is a lot do expect visiting castles...

Within munich you can take the metro, that´s no problem and you can reach all interesting points.

I loved the olympia parc. It´s a great parc with a stadion, a great lake. You can drive up the big tower and enjoy the view.

If you like animals, the zoo is great.

Go shopping if you like.. do not miss the city centre, the buildings are great.. and you´ll find the typical shops and some exclusive designer shops on the next street.

downtown with the bars in the evening...

maybe the universal studios... it´s nice but not a must..

the english garden near the university is fantastic...

if you have time take a train to one of the lakes around.. maybe "starnberger see".. it is wonderful.. with the mountains around..

if you like museums, the "deutsche museum" is my favourit of all i have ever been..

I think you will not get bored.. hope you have great weather.

whats the name of the hostel you go to?
i have stayed at a hostel myself. it was rather secure i think.
in general they have lockers, but like everywhere keep your values with you :)

Any question for details? do not hesitate to ask.

Have a good time..
I love this city!

I went to that part of Germany 2 summers ago.

I would go to Daucau (I think that is spelt wrong) It is the first concentration camp a short bus ride out of Munich (Munchen). Definately opened my eyes about the holocaust- we had a good guide when we went, though I do not know how she could do it- her parents were in a concentration camp.

Definately go downtown as well- there are a lot of good bars and neat people. There is one famous bar....it is two stories and always packed....but I was so drunk my weekend in Munich that I have no clue what the name of it was :)

As for the hostels- most of the rooms are in groups of 6 and can be locked. As for valuables, just don't bring that many or carry them with you at all times.

Watch out on the trains- we had to sleep in a train station right outside Munich one night and people tried to mug us (thought we were sleeping) 3 times.
