I'm Bavarian, and here are my favorites:
Regensburg (Ratisbon), on the river Danube. Old Roman fortress, now a modern tourist city with the Regensburger Dom (cathedral).
The Bavarian Forest, with the Großer Arber (Arber mountain), where I live nearby. Good skiing area in winter, hiking in summer.
Nürnberg (Nuremberg), the place of the post-WWII trials (but not only that; Nürnberg is full of more ancient history), Munich, and while you're there, the KZ (concentration camp) memorial at Dachau.
Maybe what you should also do is go to Passau, near the Austrian border, and take a river cruise on the Danube down to Austria. Don't miss an organ concert in the "Passauer Dom" (Passau cathedral); I'm not religious, but the organ is the biggest one in Europe, and its sound is really impressive. Usually, entrance is free.
I'm sorry if I left out some other parts of Bavaria, like Franconia (Franken) and Suebia (Schwaben), but I'm sure people from there will show up and give you some more recommendations.
If you want to travel Bavaria at a low budget, dig this:
The Bayern-Ticket.
I can't help but repeat myself, but it's the cheapest way of travel by rail.

München/Munich is an absolute must. I would recommend Berchtesgaden as well. It's gorgeous there. Berchtesgaden is more of a traditional bavarian city.
Nürnberg/Nuremberg is also a wonderful place to visit. It's a very historical city.
You should also visit the island Herreninsel. There you can tour the famous castle Herrenchiemsee built by Ludwig II of Bavaria. |

The lakes, the mountains.
Most tourists flock to Neuschwanstein castle and the Hofbräuhaus in Munich's centre.
If you're traveling by car and have the time, check out Garmisch, Königsee, Regensburg, and the old Alpine road that runs parallel to the Austrian border for fantastic views. Chiemsee and Berchtesgaden are also worth putting onto the list.
In Munich: the Residenz, Nymphenburg castle, Olympic park, the Englischer Garten, Frauenkirche, Feldherrnhalle and so on.
The beauty is when you jump in a car and go somewhere, take the country road option and off the autobahns - the views can be really great. Most of the Bavarian destinations I have mentioed above are on the train network (www.db.de - in English too) as well, so a car may not be essential. |
